So, here we go, alternate plot line go! (If yo haven’t read Pulse yet, either do so, or go read it up until the end of Part Three, where this story takes over instead of Part Four.) I have this really deep love of mythology and magic, and after writing a story all about science, I had to do the other version just for self-satisfaction. A lot of the characters and stories I mention are real, however, the characters of the ‘sun’ and ‘moon’ are not, they are personal liberties. Coyote, on the other hand, is very real, and very much a douche. He’s probably one of my favorites in Native Mythology.

He didn’t get lucky.

English was boring. It was boring, and he wanted to die, because it was as boring as the ninth ring of hell was sure to be.

He thinks he may have just be hallucinating the whole thing the day before. He was kind of tired, now that he thinks about it. He also thinks he’s put a bit too much stock in his dreams. They are probably just that—dreams. He wonders why he’s letting himself get so worked up over this.

He trudges home that day, practically collapsing into a chair at the table, and buries his face in his arms with a deep groan.

“Long day?” Arthur asks.

“The longest,” Alfred mutters. “I’m just tired of everything.”

“I had a bit of success,” Arthur tells him, sitting down across the table from him with a steaming cup of tea. Alfred perks up a little.

“Oh?”

“Mhm,” Arthur answers. He’s practically vibrating. “So, first, I should point out how incredibly complex and difficult to navigate Native American lore is. It’s preposterous, really. There can be eight or ten different versions of the same story, and even then, most of them contradict each other. The only constants are the characters, and how they act in various scenarios.”

Alfred sits up a little straighter.

“But, after a lot of digging, I stumbled across a story that matched the one you told me about.” Arthur sips his tea, and clears his throat. “It’s a Pawnee story, and they believe that the spirits of the moon and sun are a pair of wolves, one silver and one gold, who chase each other across the sky endlessly.”

“Yeah?” Alfred asks, suddenly very interested.

“Yes,” Arthur goes on, proud that he has gained Alfred’s attention. “The story goes that Coyote gave the humans a secret that allowed them to trap the spirits in order to force them to chase one another, so that they could have day and night at more convenient times, rather than whenever the spirits felt like it.”

“Why would Coyote help them?” Alfred asks. “Isn’t he a spirit too?”

“Yes,” Arthur explains, “But he’s also a trickster. Chances are, he couldn’t resist the opportunity to play the brothers for fools. Coyote has been cruel to his brothers before, framing Fox for his crimes, and even making Wolf clean up after him on numerous occasions. Telling the humans how to capture the Sun and the Moon wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.”

“Does that make him evil?” Alfred inquires, wrinkling his brow.

“No,” Arthur laughs. “Coyote…I guess he’s chaotic good.”

“Oh man, you’re using D&D terms again,” Alfred wails.
